Storyline
The programme marks 50 years since actress Barbara Knox first appeared as Rita in Coronation Street in December 1964. After eight years away, she joined the regular cast in 1972 and has been there ever since, playing one of British television's most famous characters. In this hour-long documentary, Barbara looks back on some of Rita's greatest moments and tells her own story of an Oldham girl who became one of soap opera's biggest stars. She retraces her childhood holidays on the coast and visits the Blackpool Tower Ballroom where she caught the performing bug and the Oldham Coliseum, where her earliest performances took place. Barbara also talks about her work away from the cobbles, including her singing career and appearances alongside greats such as Ken Dodd.
