Christmas is just around the corner and the nuns and midwives of Nonnatus House are busier than usual. After an abandoned baby is found on the steps of the convent, the whole community comes together to offer food and clothing and attempt to locate his mother. Jenny Lee ends up getting caught up in a mystery that surrounds an elderly local woman called Mrs Jenkins. Chummy attempts to pull out all the stops to stage a memorable children's nativity play.

1958 is drawing to a close as the residents of Poplar prepare for Christmas. Festivities are thrown into chaos when an unexploded bomb is discovered close to Nonnatus House, causing mayhem among the nuns, midwives and residents of Poplar just days before Christmas. Everyone is evacuated from their homes, and the midwives of Nonnatus House are tasked with overseeing the rescue centre until the bomb is made safe. Jenny Lee finds herself drawn into the lives of young couple Yvonne and Alan Bridges, who are expecting their first child. Since fighting in the Korean War, Alan has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and Jenny, with the help of Trixie, becomes instrumental in helping him to overcome his fears. Elsewhere, Shelagh Mannion, formerly Sister Bernadette, and Dr Turner prepare for their understated wedding. But when Timothy is struck down with a potentially fatal illness, their plans are put on hold while they keep vigil at his bedside.

Jennifer prepares for Christmas at home with Philip, and reminisces about her friends and colleagues back in her youth. Rehearsals get underway for the Sunday School Christmas concert, as Chummy tries to choreograph the dancing snowflakes. Chummy is also enlisted alongside Patsy to run a poorly managed mother and baby home. Cynthia is drawn into a case which concerns two former residents of a Victorian mental hospital who have been left to fend for themselves.

Thanks to an unexpected surprise, the Christmas magic can find place in a grieving mother's home, while Nonnatus is rocked to the core when one of its own goes missing.

The nuns are trying to help a tiny struggling mission hospital on the Eastern Cape. But can they save the hospital from closing down – and perform a Christmas miracle a long way from home?

Documentary in which Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Patrick Turner, explores the social and medical changes that took place in the 1950s and 60s relating to childbirth. Along the way, Stephen meets midwives, nuns and doctors who helped deliver babies during the period. As well as archive footage and expert interviews, the programme features clips from past editions of Call the Midwife, footage of the new sixth series and an interview with creator and writer Heidi Thomas.

Boxing Day sees heavy snowfall covering the country and the adverse weather causes major disruption across Poplar as roads become blocked and pipes freeze meaning families have to queue outside for water from standpipes. Sister Julienne must inform a family about the death of their loved one and uncovers an uncomfortable truth, while Valerie helps an unmarried couple living in a caravan prepare for their baby, but unforeseen complications knock her confidence in her ability as a midwife. As Poplar prepares for Christmas, the nuns leave for the Mother House to vote in a new mother superior and to help care for a group of Chinese orphans. Meanwhile, Trixie returns to Poplar refreshed and is shocked to discover that many mothers no longer want to give birth at home.

Mother Mildred declares that God is calling her to set up a branch house in the Outer Hebrides, so she is joined by several other members of the team, including Dr Turner, Shelagh, Mother Mildred, Trixie, Sister Julienne, Valerie, Lucille and Fred, many of whom have been struck down by flu and like the idea of convalescing in the fresh Scottish air. However, as they set about establishing an antenatal clinic and treating the local population, they must battle not only the weather and challenging terrain, but the suspicions of the islanders. Back in Poplar, Reggie is inspired to attempt a world record.

Having dealt with some extremely naughty sheep last year in the Outer Hebrides, this year the gang are in Poplar. Everyone is hoping for a nice uneventful Christmas, but of course that doesn’t happen! Sister Monica Joan is rushed to hospital, while Trixie is less than impressed to receive a subscription to a Marriage Bureau as a Christmas present. Meanwhile, the circus is in town as ex Time Lord Peter Davison plays Mr Percival the Ringmaster.
