16x01 Episode 1456 (1st January 1975)

With Ena back in St Annes, Minnie and Eddie settle down. Carlos doesn't want to use his bedsit to entertain Mavis as he's conscious of his bed. Rita lets them use The Kabin flat. Eddie and Bet's dates continue to be cancelled as Bet keeps being called into work. He refuses to go back to Walton until he's slept with Bet. Hilda thinks Eddie has the power of foresight as he knew about the blackout before it happened. Eddie tells everyone he's in the army. Nobby Harris stores some stolen goods of tinned ham in Minnie's coal hole. Eddie tells her that he won it at bingo. The Bishops don't plan to foster again in the immediate future. Annie lets Bet have the night off to meet Eddie. Nobby tells Eddie that someone has told the police about the break-in and local villain Big Arthur thinks he's the snitch. Eddie has to drop Bet to face his accuser. Annie has Blanche over for a New Year drink.

16x02 Episode 1457 (6th January 1975)

Mavis doesn't know what to say to Carlos. Bet is annoyed that Eddie stood her up. Annie tells Eddie she'll give Bet the night off if he can come up with a replacement. He talks Blanche into it. Mavis decides to accept Carlos. Big Arthur wants his ham back but Minnie has already started on it. Eddie has to pay compensation and give it all back. Carlos gives Mavis his ring. He tells her they must marry at once as he needs a work permit. He offers her money but she angrily refuses to marry him. Bet and Eddie are just getting passionate when P.C. Sadler of the police arrives and arrest him.

16x03 Episode 1458 (8th January 1975)

Ray forgets to set the alarm resulting in the builders oversleeping. Jerry refuses to make their breakfasts after Len and Ray stay up to 4.00am playing cards. A pigeon lands on Albert's outside lavatory roof. He adopts the bird and names it Gilbert. Ray tells Jerry that Mavis is getting married. Jerry doesn't believe him until Deirdre says she heard it from Rita. Betty and Maggie realise they're going to have to tell Gordon the truth. Battered wife Lynn Johnson asks Len for help. He offers to put her in touch with an organisation that can help her but she refuses to contact them or the police as then her husband Roy would know she's been blabbing. He wants to help and asks her to come back if she needs someone to talk to. Albert decides to build a pigeon cote and asks Ray for materials and advice. He's hoping that Ray will volunteer to make up the cote for him but Ray doesn't take the bait. On Deirdre's advice, Albert asks Jerry for help.

16x04 Episode 1459 (13th January 1975)

Gordon doesn't know what to think; he's relieved Les Clegg isn't his father but doesn't like the idea of being Betty's bastard son. He decides to go out for a drink. Jerry makes a cote for Gilbert. Albert watches for him settling in to it in order to know that he'll fly back if released. Deirdre tries to give Jerry some confidence in himself, saying that what matters is the person that you are. Maggie breaks down as Gordon returns drunk to celebrate the fact that Les is not his father. He taunts Betty and Maggie. The next day, Gilbert flies back to No.1 when he's released from the Red Rec. Albert is delighted. Gordon is hung-over. He asks Betty for details of his father. Betty doesn't name him but tells Gordon the circumstances of his birth and adoption. Maggie points out that Les never used the fact that Gordon wasn't his son against him.

16x05 Episode 1460 (15th January 1975)

Albert threatens to sue Stan and Jerry for the loss of Gilbert. Janet calls in at The Kabin on her way to Bessie Street School and hears from Rita that Ken doesn't have a woman in his life. Mavis hasn't told anyone about her broken engagement but her behaviour tells Rita all she needs to know. Albert takes a crack from Ray about Stan and Jerry going to Ireland to release Gilbert seriously and demands £1 from each of them. The residents wonder who Lynn Johnson is when Len meets her in the Rovers. Janet lets herself into No.11 and waits for Ken. Len advises Lynn to keep out of her husband's way. Jerry and Stan look for Gilbert to avoid having to pay Albert. Stan coughs up after a tiring day searching.

16x06 Episode 1461 (20th January 1975)

Rita tries to find out why Mavis is upset but Mavis is silent. The residents are pleased that the Barlows are back together. Lynn Johnson agrees to go to the police if Len will go with her. Albert catches Bobby on Gilbert's loft surounded by feathers. The Barlows like being just good friends. Len lets hysterical Lynn stay at No.9. When he tries to go to work she begs him not to leave her alone, her shouts being heard by the Barlows. Minnie tries to console Albert. Mavis tells Rita about Carlos. Janet and Ken agree to get together to talk about a divorce. Albert overhears a woman screaming in No.9. Ray and Jerry enter the house and find Lynn's body.

16x07 Episode 1462 (22nd January 1975)

Jerry calls the police while Ray looks for Len. Det. Chief Insp. Patterson arrives as does Doctor McKay who states that Lynn Johnson died from a blow to the head. Hilda sees the police car outside and spreads the word. Albert tells Alf what he heard from No.9. Ray can't find Len and returns to No.9. He and Jerry are kept away from the murder scene. Patterson finds it strange that neither of them knows the dead woman's name. Annie shows new Newton & Ridley house manager Keith Adams round the Rovers and is embarrassed that the police are in the street during his visit. Ray and Jerry are taken to the station for questioning. The residents are astonished to see them being driven away in a police car. Lynn's body is taken away in an ambulance. Onlookers wonder who is under the shroud. Jerry lets slip to Det Sgt Phillips that he doesn't always take Ray at his word.

16x08 Episode 1463 (27th January 1975)

The police set up headquarters in the community centre where Det Sgt Phillips questions the residents while Det. Chief Insp. Patterson interviews Ray and Jerry at the station. Len is brought in, not knowing what's going on. Phillips questions Annie and Billy as to when Ray and Jerry left the Rovers. The regulars speculate as to the identity of the woman killed. Ken doesn't think he or Janet should say anything about what they heard until they are asked. Alf tells the shocked regulars that the police are treating the matter as a murder. Patterson questions Len and asks him where he went after leaving the Rovers. Len says he left home at 1.15pm after finishing writing out a tender and drove to Grindrods in Queen Street. He was then picked up by them at 2.30pm. Patterson shows him a photo of Lynn Johnson that was found in her handbag and he identifies her.

16x09 Episode 1464 (29th January 1975)

Det. Chief Insp. Patterson comes to the community centre to question Albert about his evidence. Exhibiting great patience he manages to pin down the time he heard the scream as being 1.35pm. Albert also gives a guarded agreement that it was Len's voice he heard. Deirdre hears a description of Lynn Johnson and realises she saw her at the yard. Morbid sensation-seekers come into the Rovers to be near the scene of the crime. Patterson takes Jerry through Len's statement while Phillips questions Ray again. Patterson thinks Len is lying to him about where he was working when Jerry says the tender was delivered prior to dinnertime. The police get Ray to say that Len is hard-fisted.

16x10 Episode 1465 (3rd February 1975)

Len has been kept in overnight. Phillips questions Roy Johnson who says his wife left home on the day of her death at 12.30pm. He swears he never hit her and loved her. Bet asks Rita if she has been down to the police station to try and see Len. Tricia gets nowhere when she tries to question Ray and Jerry on the details on the body. Det. Chief Insp. Patterson questions Alf about Len's previous record. Patterson takes the Barlows to the community centre to ask them about what they heard. They tell them of hearing Lynn and Len at 1.15pm when she said “don’t leave me”. Patterson is displeased that they didn’t come forward before. Lodger Clifford Fenton sticks by his story that no one came to the house after Lynn left. Patterson tells Len he's got enough evidence to charge him with murder. Len starts to crack up. Bet tries to visit Len but is turned away by the police. The pathologist says Lynn died from brain damage caused through excessive beating but Patterson doesn't trust Johnson as L

Jerry makes it clear that he’s not pleased at the lack of support Len received from Rita. Len has spent the night at Alf's house after he picked him up at the police station. He is upset that Rita didn't visit him. Vera puts a ban on gossiping about Len in the corner shop. Mavis tells Emily that Rita has a guilty conscience about Len. He is welcomed back to the Rovers and thanks Bet for her support although he spurns the offer of a drink from Rita. Alf has to find a hostess to help him entertain a visiting councillor from Yorkshire. Len suggests Annie. Idris pretends to have stomach ache to get out of eating Granny's fish. She thinks he has food poisoning from a Rovers' pie. Annie is in Derby and can't help, but Hilda offers her services to Alf. Mavis tells Jerry that Carlos only asked her to marry him for a resident's permit. Mavis worries about what to cook for Alf's guests and works herself up into a headache. Rita gets exasperated with her. Granny insists she is a reasonable woman and Betty reacted the way she did as she doesn't like being beholden to them for their kindness. Vera worries that no customers are coming in. Granny says she has fixed Betty already. Gordon arrives to see Betty. Mavis panics again when she remembers Alf's cooker is a gas one. She goes back home to fetch her cookery book. Mavis cries off and Rita takes her place wearing a revealing dress. Gordon tells Betty that Granny has written him a letter telling him about his mother. Vera worries about why Gordon has come up from London. Alf asks Rita to cover up a bit. Harold and Dawn Digby turn out to be very down to earth when they arrive, with Dawn also wearing a revealing dress.

Hilda, Minnie and Albert can't understand why the corner shop is shut and worry that something has gone wrong inside. Deirdre is depressed that Billy hasn't sent her a Valentine. Ray fetches Stan and his ladders to look through the window. Tricia turns up and tells them the shop is empty. Rita tells Mavis the meal went well, especially her food. Stan is sent a Valentine, but not from Hilda. She thinks it's from Clara Regan. Ray tells Bet he sent it for a laugh. Annie is glad the Hopkinses have left as she feels they were too greedy. The Hopkinses send Gordon back the shop keys with a letter through Gail. He wonders who can look after the shop. Hilda calls round on Clara but gets sent away with a flea in her ear. Stan feels ill and doesn't need Hilda rowing with him. Gordon tells Betty that the letter from Vera explains that she and Idris felt too ashamed to stay in the street. Mavis makes Rita show Deirdre the nightie but she refuses to say who she thinks it's from. Gordon refuses to let Betty try again for time off to help him in the corner shop. Hilda offers her services in the shop to a stunned Gordon. Blanche offers a horrified Stan a man's corset to help his bad back. Having heard the gossip, Bet calls into The Kabin to see the nightie, asking if it's from Len. Gail and Tricia agree to flat-share together. Hilda fusses round a tired Stan, trying to get him to agree to ask Gordon to let them run the shop but he angrily refuses, knowing the neighbours will want them to fail. Alf gives Mavis perfume as a thank-you, and another bottle to pass on to Rita for the same reason. Business at the yard is bad. Gordon wants Blanche to run the shop for him. Under doctor's orders, Stan has been told to rest. Lying on the sofa, he gets Hilda to run errands for him, including placing his bets. With little work coming in, Ray annoys Jerry with his lax attitude. They argue over the benefits of capitalism. Finding out that the girls are moving into the corner shop flat, Ray pushes Tricia to have a flat-warming party. She borrows a hammer from him to do some work in the flat. Gail moves her possessions in as Blanche starts running the corner shop. Hilda warns the girls to keep quiet now that they're her neighbours. Gail thinks a party is a good idea. Rita can't think who sent her the nightie. Remembering that it's a year since she and Len were engaged, she wonders if he was the giver but he persuades her otherwise. The girls draw up a guest list of invitees. They realise they'll have to invite Hilda to stop any complaints. Jerry thinks they should branch out into house insulation but Ray sneers at his ideas.

16x16 Episode 1471 (24th February 1975)

Tricia and Gail prepare for their flat-warming. Rita reveals Harold Digby sent the gifts. She rings him up and tells him to stop it. Annie gets Hilda worried that Stan has picked up a virus. She rings the doctor. Len gets it out of Mavis that Digby sent the presents by making a play for her, scaring her out of her wits. Dawn Digby arrives at the Rovers in a flash car, to the men's excitement. She tells Rita that Harold always sends presents to attractive women but that they have a happy marriage. The doctor thinks Stan should have a check-up in hospital. Jeff Lee and Tim Russell, Tricia and Gail's boyfriends, drink at the Rovers while they wait for the party to start. Blanche, Deirdre, Alf, Albert, Rita, Hilda, Annie and Ken are the girls' guests. Jerry doesn't go as it'd remind him of Sheila's party where he made a fool of himself. Deirdre gets Ken to dance with her. Jeff and Tim decide to give the party a miss when Ray warns them that most of the guests will be in their seventies.

Stan goes into hospital for tests. Tricia wants to use her day off to decorate the flat. Gail would rather they get some lads in to do it for them and watch them at work. Len puts Deirdre on part-time hours at the yard and offers her afternoons in The Kabin. Ray offers to decorate the flat for the girls. Len realises someone will have to go and he and Ray decide on Jerry as he was the last one in. Stan is entertained by fellow patient Ronnie Barnes and gets Hilda to include him in their conversations as he doesn't have any family. Jerry refuses to leave the business and reminds Len and Ray that partnerships are for bad times as well as good. He makes them feel ashamed for wanting to drop him and they change their minds. Mavis fears her job is at risk when Deirdre mentions Len's offer. Stan has an EEG and is put on a diet by the doctor. Minnie looks for a western for Albert to read and settles on Midnight Cowboy.

16x18 Episode 1473 (3rd March 1975)

Mavis is on tenterhooks, expecting Len to replace her with Deirdre. Len and Ray ignore Jerry's rota and carry on as normal. The yard only has one job on for a Mr Wharton. Len agrees to do it whilst the others advertise for new business. Deirdre makes up leaflets for the men to deliver. In hospital, Stan has become fast friends with Ronnie Barnes, especially since he shared his bottle of wine. Len lays on the charm with Mavis, telling her she's his number one employee, which succeeds in mollifying her. Hilda shames the residents for not visiting Stan even though he's not bothered. Tricia and Gail get Jerry and Ray to help them decorate the flat. Bet cooks Len a meal. He's about to leave when he remembers the yard job but ends up staying with her instead.

16x19 Episode 1474 (5th March 1975)

Len goes for Ray and calls Jerry an old woman when they tell him they're disgusted with him. Now she's eighteen, Tricia gets Annie to serve her with a Bacardi. Stan returns home. He has otitis media; his balance is disturbed and he's got anaemia and the district nurse is to call on him. Len tells Bet he just wants her as an occasional bit on the side. She tells him to get lost.

Hilda complains to Blanche about the noise of Tricia and Gail's record player after hours, saying it's disturbing Stan's sleep, and she threatens the police. Blanche agrees to give the girls credit if they'll help out occasionally in the shop. Short of money, they have no choice but to agree. Annie thinks Hilda is avoiding her cleaning duties using looking after Stan as an excuse and gets Betty to ring Bet to find where she's got to. In her flat, Bet ignores the ringing phone. Stan objects to the healthy food that Hilda feeds him. They prepare for a visit from Social Services to see what benefits they're entitled to. Ray is angry with Len for losing a job from Mr Wharton. Ernie's business is down. Annie admires Blanche's courage in leaving the shop in the girls' hands. Len hears from Betty that Bet hasn't turned in. He calls on her. Eddie returns from serving his time, spinning a yarn that he's just come out of the army. Len and Bet have spent the night together and Hilda sees them arriving back in Len's van. With Minnie away visiting friends, Eddie is homeless. Jerry tries to tidy up the yard, much to Len and Ray's amusement. Bet refuses Eddie's requests for digs. Bet tells Eddie that everyone knows he's been in prison. Eddie challenges Len to a darts match for money which he loses. Eddie asks Len for a job at the yard but there isn't enough work on for them. Tricia and Gail are locked out of the flat at night. Ray and Jerry find out about Len and Bet. The girls buy Eddie a drink and ask him to break in for them. A tired Hilda applies for her third job: washing-up in the warehouse canteen. Using the Ogdens' ladder, Eddie gets into the flat. Len and Bet flaunt their relationship in front of the regulars. The girls reluctantly let Eddie sleep on the kitchen floor.

Blanche opens the corner shop and is worried that she can hear nothing from the flat above. Gail and Tricia have overslept and they try to keep Eddie out of sight of Blanche. They realise that they'll have to lock him in while they go to work after Blanche threatens to return to clean up. The yard has no jobs on so Len, Ray and Jerry play cards in the office. Hilda tries to get Stan to do the housework while she goes out on her various jobs but he settles down to read the paper instead. A bored Eddie spends the morning drinking cider and reading the girls' magazines. Betty is annoyed that Hilda is late coming in to clean the Rovers, especially when Stan calls in for a bottle to take out. Alf warns Len against flaunting his relationship with Bet. The girls return with fish and chips for Eddie, annoyed that Blanche won't leave the shop for her lunch break. Alf thinks he can smell gas in the street. Ena returns from St Annes. The brewery runs a "Personality of the Pub" contest. Hilda is run ragged looking after Stan. Eddie tries to sell a pheasant, Ken buys it off him. Ena and Eddie both ask Minnie for digs. Bet tries to get Len interested in a foreign holiday. Ena tells Eddie he can stay in the front parlour of No.5 if he gets a job. She tells Minnie that Henry Foster's sister-in-law has taken him over. Stan takes Eddie on to help Hilda with the windows.

16x24 Episode 1479 (24th March 1975)

Hilda and Eddie work well together. The residents are annoyed at the way Stan is using Hilda. Len begins to feel trapped by Bet when she buys him a sweater. Eddie runs a book on the "Personality of the Pub" competition. The residents are amazed at Stan's cheek as he drinks in the Rovers. Eddie is entertained by Clara Regan inside 19 Inkerman Street. Ken tells Len that at their age women want commitment, not friendship. Hilda and Eddie do better than Stan. They only give Stan £1 from their £9 earnings. Bet plans a night at the pictures with Len. Annie counts the votes and Betty is the winner. Len stands Bet up.

Eddie tells Carlos he is Bet's husband. Deirdre is annoyed that she is still engaged and not married. Len tells Eddie he doesn't mind if he takes Bet out. Billy tells Deirdre he's worth £526; he can't afford to marry. Deirdre says she'll willingly live in the Rovers if she has to. Eddie tells Bet that Len gave him the go ahead. She is furious. Billy and Deirdre fix the date - 1st June. He tells Annie it will be a full white wedding.

Rita is certain Bet and Len won't last long. Billy decides not to tell Annie he's going to pay for the wedding and not Blanche. Len refuses to commit himself to Bet; he just wants her at the moment. She tells him she'd like them to live together. When it is clear he wants the occasional one night stand she tells him she's having none of it. Annie is horrified that Billy is to foot the bill. She announces the date to the regulars. Steve Baker arrives looking for Bet.

16x27 Episode 1482 (2nd April 1975)

Steve Baker asks the regulars when Bet will be coming in. Annie is annoyed that she is late for work and aims to have it out with her. Albert bores Steve with war talk while he waits. He is bitter about his work in Northern Ireland and annoys Ernie when he blames religion for the conflict. He apologises to him when he hears that he's a preacher and asks him for his experiences of breaking bad news to people. Betty and Alf recognise Steve from the last time he came into the Rovers. Bet arrives for work to hard words from Annie. Steve asks for a word with her and takes her to a side table. As the regulars chat, Steve breaks shocking news to her and she flees into the back room where Betty finds her in a state. Steve reveals to Annie, Betty and Billy that Martin Downes, the lad he was with on his last visit, has died and he was Bet's son. Stunned, Annie and Betty go to comfort Bet but she has gone to seek refuge in her flat.

16x28 Episode 1483 (7th April 1975)

Annie doesn't expect Bet to come into work. Billy thinks they shouldn't pussyfoot round her when she does come in and they and Betty agree to tell all the regulars simply that she's had a bereavement in the family. Annie takes it upon herself to arrange Billy and Deirdre's wedding photographs. Eddie calls round to see Bet while he's on his round. She can't face the outside world. He tries to force her to get ready to go to work but she claims she has no clean tights to wear. He tries to cheer her up with talk of hope for the future. While Bet takes a call for Carlos, Eddie pinches her dirty tights. Deirdre and Billy go to see the vicar to organise the wedding. Bet is touched when Eddie washes her tights in a launderette so that she can go to work. Alf takes Albert to task for missing ping-pong balls from the community centre. Albert demands help if Billy and Deirdre have their reception there. Bet walks into the Rovers with a smile on her face. Distracted,

Annie has gone to stay at Joan's. Eddie helps Hilda to clean the Rovers so they can get on the window cleaning round quicker. Betty tells Hilda that Stan is taking her for a mug. The packing department at the warehouse is put on a three day week. Tricia worries that she will lose her job in the cuts. Len and Ray think Jerry is becoming too homely and wifey. Stan tells Hilda the doctor has given him another sick note. Ivy asks Ken to find out about their job security. Betty wonders if Eddie is helping Stan in order to case houses to burgle. Jerry cooks a nice pie for Len and Ray. Ken finds out that Marcus Berlin is on his way up from London and wonders why. Stan tells Eddie the doctor says he can return to work. He doesn't tell Hilda though as he doesn't think he's fit enough yet. Marcus fobs Ken off about the redundancies.

Ivy and the girls push Ken for news of the redundancies. Jerry enjoys doing the housework rather than the yard jobs. Ivy thinks Ken is stalling her on the redundancies. Betty tells Hilda she's overdoing it and agrees to keep it quiet from Stan that she's going to the doctors for a tonic. Billy pokes fun at Ray and Len about Jerry's housekeeping. Betty tells Stan about Hilda's visit to the doctor. He starts to panic. Stan offers to take on some of Hilda's workload. She's grateful but refuses and insists on keeping her appointment at the doctor's. Marcus Berlin tells Ken that 20% of the workers have to go. Ray tells Jerry that Billy is laughing at his domesticity. He takes offence. Hilda discovers Stan has been signed off. She goes for him in the Rovers. Marcus tells Ken that he's one of the staff that has to go as they will need less management.

Hilda, Rita and Mavis speculate on Annie's wedding outfit. Tricia spreads the news that Ken has been made redundant. Albert nags Ken about his tardiness. He doesn't tell him he's out of work. Annie returns from Derby with her wedding outfit that she went to Chester specially for. Betty and Bet wonder what it looks like. Annie tells Billy that Joan is delighted at the news of his wedding. Deirdre is pleased at Billy's "cost-no-object" approach to the wedding and the posh place he's booked for the reception. Annie asks Blanche to come round so they compare outfits.

Rita and Mavis think something must be wrong with Peter to make him come down from Glasgow on his own but Ena thinks he just needs a smack and sending home. Peter tells Ken that he used his saved Christmas money to buy the train ticket. Ken also realises something is wrong with Peter and pushes him to tell him what it is. Deirdre buys her wedding dress material for Blanche to make up. Annie says she refuses to quarrel with Blanche over the dress. She asks Billy to have a tactful word with her instead but he refuses to get involved. Ken rings Edith Tatlock but she has no idea why Peter's made the trip either. Ken rings Peter's headmaster, Mr Campbell at Strathmore Road Primary School. Albert takes Peter for a snack at The Kabin. Ena takes Peter to task for upsetting Edith but softens and buys him a coke when she hears that he's apologised and been forgiven. Eddie considers starting his own window cleaning round on the Parkway Estate as Stan doesn't pay him enough even though he does the lion's share of the work. Peter tells Ken that he's being bullied in Glasgow because he doesn't have a father. Tricia is jealous when Gail gets a second interview for an air hostess job. At Deirdre's insistence, Billy puts Annie right about where they'll be living when they're married. Annie is hurt when he says it was his idea as Blanche has two living rooms. Ken tries for an interview with a firm of educational publishers. Peter gets excited when Ken promises to take him to a Manchester United match.

Billy considers postponing the wedding until he and Deirdre can afford a place of their own. Gail is confident that she'll bag the airline job and starts acting full of herself. Annie tries to bully Blanche into going along with her wedding ideas but Blanche doesn't mind anyway. Annie is shocked to learn that Deirdre and Billy won't be living with her. Billy is angry to be woken up by Fury's barking. Ray and Jerry arrive at the yard and find Eddie's message. They're relieved to find none of the copper piping or petty cash missing. Ray is livid. Deirdre tells Blanche about her row with Billy and she admits that she doesn't know what she wants from life. Billy finds out that Deirdre has gone into town to shop for the wedding. Ray tries to wind him up. Rita is annoyed that Mavis has arranged rehearsals with Ernie for her, feeling she's being pushed into something she's not sure about. Eddie and Stan call at the yard. Eddie shows them how insecure the establishment is against professional villains. Ray and Jerry have to admit that he's right and hire the dog for a week for £5. Emily can't see why Ernie wants to get into swing music but he's really keen. Blanche drags Deirdre into the Rovers where Annie asks her if she and Billy have had a tiff. Ray is amused to hear that Billy and Deirdre's wedding is off. Blanche can't fathom why Deirdre has dropped Billy. Billy can't explain to Annie why he isn't getting married as he isn't sure himself. Emily isn't happy about Ernie playing with Rita. Ray tells Deirdre that Gail didn't get the air hostess job and asks her out for a drink at The Flying Horse but she turns him down. Alec Gilroy introduces himself to Ernie. Blanche avoids the Rovers as she doesn't want Annie giving her the third degree but Annie goes to see her at the corner shop, ignoring Billy's wishes. She backs off when she sees that Blanche is as in the dark as her. Billy waits to see Deirdre at Blanche's house and tells Blanche that he still loves Deirdre. Blanche asks him to give Deirdre time to sort herself out. He tells her he can't hang around. Alec gets Rita and Ernie a gig but warns them that they'll have to work their way up to clubs.

Stan tries to interest local firms in hiring Fury. Albert bills Stan for Fury's meals. Stan thinks he's been feeding the dog too much and tells him to starve Fury as he'll be a better guard dog. Eddie suggests Rita has Fury as her own personal guard dog. Ray's attempts to wind up Deirdre are stopped in their tracks when he hears the wedding is off. Ray insists to Eddie that Fury is removed from the yard. Ray chats up Rovers' customer Cindy Beswick and her friend. Deirdre finds the chewed bone and theorises that the crime was committed by someone who knew about the dog. Rita is a bag of nerves as her first night approaches. Betty and Bet look after the Rovers in Annie's absence. Hilda puts on that she's scandalised to see Bet hanging round outside the door in her short, pink dressing gown first thing in the morning and threatens to tell Annie. Harry Goulden thinks WARP should elect an action committee and they agree to meet in No.3 at lunchtime. Len doesn't want Jerry to move in with Betty as they'll be losing their chief cook and bottle washer. He starts being nice to him but Jerry isn't taken in. Minnie tells Len that all the residents are gunning for him. Ernie and Emily round up the residents for the meeting. Ken refuses to get involved thinking their protest is useless. Ken tells Blanche he's seeing someone about a job but is evasive as to what it is. Ernie, Emily and Harry confront Len in the Rovers about his non-attendance at the previous WARP meeting but he's not concerned about their opinion. Ray sneers at Jerry's interest in WARP.

Emily is infuriated by Ernie's pompousness and sexism with regards to him being put on the WARP committee over her. Harry Goulden tells the Bishops that the council didn't even discuss the rates at the latest finance meeting but he's discovered that they're sending Councillor Lucas, the finance chairman, to a conference in Torquay, out of the rates, in the mayoral Rolls. Ken enjoys cabbing but everyone thinks he's putting a brave face on. Ernie and Harry demand that Len put a stop to the Torquay trip as he's on the finance committee. Len refuses to discuss the trip as it's not public knowledge and tells them they're a joke. Ernie gathers the residents in the Rovers promising them a fight. When Len arrives, Ernie tries to get him to repeat his earlier comments on tape - unless it was off the record.

Mavis tries to organise a trip to the Gatsby Club to see Rita sing and tries to persuade Ken to join them but he makes no promises, possibly having taxi work. Hilda isn't asked but claims she has a previous engagement anyway. Bet is especially nice to Betty to get her to let her leave early for the Gatsby trip. Ernie is pleased with Blanche's organisation of residents who will write in protest against the rates rise, and Jerry promises his van to deliver leaflets. Bet and Betty spend another night in the Rovers. Betty admits she dislikes being there after closing. Bet finds a pair of old-fashioned glasses on the bar. They remind Minnie of ones that Martha Longhurst used to wear. Emily takes Ernie through a rehearsal of his radio interview but he does badly. Ralph Lancaster tells Rita her contract won't be extended at the Gatsby. Ernie hears that his interview will be with a councillor to give him the opportunity to challenge him.

Betty hears a woman's voice in the snug and tells Bet she saw someone in there wearing the glasses in the middle of the night. They discover the glasses are missing. Ena and Minnie are interested in Betty's story as they think she saw the ghost of Martha Longhurst. Ken is sceptical and tries to explain it away. Deirdre and Ray puzzle about their feelings for each other. Ernie is worried about his radio interview. When he accidentally steps on his glasses and breaks them, it sets him on edge. Albert asks him to enquire about pensions. As Earnshaw has laryngitis, Councillor Garret is interviewed with Ernie instead. Ernie brings up the tractors and Garret can't explain them. While Ernie and his supporters celebrate their apparent victory, Len assures Alf that the tractors were sold last month at a profit and Ernie could be libelled.

Ray and Len, working at the Rovers, nick drinks for themselves, Alf and Eddie before discovering Annie has marked the optics. Len tops them up with water. Annie is warned that the Custom and Excise man is expected. Ray buys replacement bottles of spirits. Len drops out of the Torquay trip and the radio station issues an apology so Ernie won't be sued. The men have to drink all the spirits so Betty can change the optics. They get completely drunk, forcing the drink down. Deirdre is furious when they force Bacardi down Tricia and make her ill. Annie is astonished by the drunks. Deirdre points out that Betty doesn't need the replacement bottles. Before she can return them to Len, Annie finds them and uses them. In Rita's absence, Mavis orders two gross of tights from salesman Les Buckley. Betty and Annie see the same glasses on the bar again. A customer, Barney Gardner, claims them.

Blanche castigates Deirdre for giving up her job though she also offers to go round and slap Ray again as she sees him as the cause of her daughter's troubles. Clearing up the yard office, Len and Jerry row with Ray for taunting Deirdre. He refuses to apologise to her even when the other two demand it. Albert complains about The Kabin cafe's weak cordial to get a refund. Ernie wants to speak to Rita about him playing piano for her but he has to wait until Emily's out of the way. He asks her not to say anything to Emily but Rita thinks he's being ridiculous. Blanche is surprised when Ray turns up at 20 Victoria Street to talk to Deirdre. He admits he's in the wrong but an angry Deirdre tells Ray he's been getting at her since she first went out with Billy. Len and Jerry ask Ray if he was serious about what he told them last night about him and Deirdre getting married. Deirdre breaks the news to Blanche. She thinks she's being ridiculous. Deirdre tells her she can't explain it herself, except that they're well-matched, and has no doubts at all. Blanche tries to talk her out of it but is nonplussed when she'd told the wedding is at the register office tomorrow, the 9th July. Deirdre is happy to take the risk and the challenge. Blanche gives her consent. Len wonders if they should try and stop the wedding. Rita tells Ken why Ernie was so alarmed to see him in his taxi. They find it amusing. Rita urges Ernie to come clean with Emily and kids him on that Ken is a gossip. Bet is stunned at Deirdre's news and thinks she's barmy. A hung-over Ray tries to sober up and is annoyed that Len got him drunk at the stag night. He also doesn't like the way Len is taking him over. Len remembers his own disastrous stag night and tells Ray he slipped him the mickey he'd seen him prepare for Jerry. Blanche is upset that Deirdre is getting married in her work suit and not the dress she spent so long making. Rita gives her the present of a cookery book. Deirdre forgot to book a photographer. Annie tells Bet and Hilda that she thinks Deirdre is unstable. Hilda thinks there's more to the hurried arrangements than meet the eye. The reception continues; the champagne is handed out while Ray and Deirdre are impatient to get the train to London for their honeymoon. Jerry makes a prepared speech which is interrupted and laughed at, flustering him. Len steps in and makes the toast. The champagne quickly runs out and Eddie goes to the supermarket to get more with Len's money. Annie gets Len's assurance that Deirdre didn't cheat on Billy when she was engaged to him. The Langtons have to cut a cake with Deirdre's name misspelt by Bet. Stan is kept waiting at the hospital and is upset at missing the free drinks. He lights up a cigarette. Ray and Deirdre try to get away but Ena and Minnie arrive and demand drinks. Deirdre slips home to change. Annie tells Ena she's worried that Billy has left things too late. Minnie remembers she has to get Eddie's dinner on and rushes off. Blanche worries what sort of future Deirdre will have with someone like Ray. Ena tells Eddie to leave No.5 as he's too much work for Minnie. Len and Jerry bicker over domestic chores. Len tells him to move in with Betty - immediately. Len is annoyed with Eddie's snoring through the night and the speed with which he makes breakfast. Jerry wakes up on the floor of the yard office after an uncomfortable night. A cheerful Alf slaps on the aftershave. Deirdre decides to show Ray how he has committed all of the seven deadly sins in his life. Rita persuades Blanche to go to the pictures with her that night. Jerry admits to Bet where he spent the night. Minnie tells Ena to stop interfering in her life. Bet tells Jerry that Len is bound to want him back. Donna Parker catches up with Alf at work and checks that he wasn't insulted by her behaviour last night. She frets about the effect of her letter. When Jerry finds Eddie installed at No.9, he doesn't tell Len he's homeless.

Donna makes of pretence of fretting at being late for work. Alf tells her that he's happy to have her around the place and to make sure she has the flat that's right for her before moving out. Blanche returns home and starts bossing the Langtons about as it's her house. Minnie buys Albert a paper but he's ungrateful as he already has one. She's puzzled why he won't sit down at the table with her and wonders if he has a boil. Donna tidies up for Alf while he's at a committee meeting. He offers to drive her to work but she refuses. She tells him about her training as a hairdresser and how she would love a salon of her own. Annie can't believe that Minnie has evicted Ena. Ken hears that Albert is acting strangely. A reluctant Ray goes food shopping but calls into the Rovers on the way back and has the mickey taken out of him.

Emily calls in on Albert and finds Minnie tidying up there. She's surprised to find that he had an immediate operation last night after Ken took him to hospital and has had a lump removed from his bottom. Donna tells Alf how much she hates the GPO canteen and how much she enjoyed hairdressing. Emily calls on Alf and is surprised to see Donna there. Emily tells Alf about Albert and they need a replacement caretaker at the community centre. Once she has gone, Donna worries about how it all looks but Alf tells her not to bother herself. Blanche nags Deirdre to help with the Sunday lunch and Ray to do some painting that he promised her. Len notices how cheerful Alf seems. Alf asks his advice on hairdressing as a business venture. Ken returns from visiting Albert to say that he's being discharged later that day though he won't say exactly what the operation was for.

Donna brings Alf his tea in bed and flatters him about his maturity. Len does some plumbing work at the Rovers which prevents Stan from getting a clean bucket of water. He's depressed to hear the price of beer is going up. Alf enjoys a slap-up breakfast made by Donna. She tells him she can't take his money for the hairdressing business but is going to go to a moneylender instead. He insists she takes it from him or he'll be offended. Emily looks after the corner shop whilst Blanche goes to Majorca for a holiday. Ken tells her that he's not going to be volunteering from now onwards, looking after his own needs instead. Hilda upsets Emily when she complains about rising prices in the shop and hints that they don't pay their window-cleaning bills promptly. Mavis has a week off and agrees to help out in the shop for some holiday money, earning her what The Kabin pays her plus £2. Alf fusses round Donna.

Emily reorganises the corner shop shelves. She and Mavis enjoy working together. Albert drops hints that his next birthday is his eightieth. Donna gives the money back to Alf saying she just can't keep it. He refuses it, saying he has faith in her ability to make the salon a success and refuses any sort of legal agreement. Eddie's only idea to increase their income is horse-betting. Stan thinks they should do as everyone else is doing and increase their prices. Albert sulks, thinking no one cares about his birthday. Ken admits to Betty that he ought to arrange something. The Ogdens announce they're putting up their prices by 50% but Betty and Len refuse to pay, although Annie agrees. Hilda worries they're going to lose all their customers. Donna puts Alf off taking her to the Rovers, worried what people will say about the two of them.

Ena returns from St Annes to check up on Minnie. The residents feel they should lay something on for Albert's upcoming eightieth birthday. Ena finds Minnie is away staying with Handel Gartside. The residents plan a party for Albert but he tells Ken he's going to Glasgow. Albert feels nobody likes him and locks himself in No.1. Beattie Pearson arrives but he refuses to talk to her. Albert can't afford the fare to Glasgow. No one wants to put Ena up. Len suggests a street party for Albert. Ena reminds Annie that the Rovers is an inn and tells her she's moving in.

Tricia and Gail keep Albert occupied as the residents dress the street by sitting with him in No.1 and pretending that they're interested in hearing about the First World War. Ernie faces jail if he doesn't pay his rates. Hilda flies a Union Jack from her bedroom window as part of the decorations. When he is summoned to his front door, Albert is astounded by the street party. Rita is furious when Len kisses her. She refuses to start it all again. She "helps" Tricia keep her rollers in place by giving her one of her hairnets to wear. Ken tells the men about his computer pairing. He tells them he might arrange to meet "Mavis Armitage". Rita overhears and guesses that Mavis is Miss Armitage.

Ken and Mavis enjoy themselves at the Roebuck Inn. Mavis tells Ken she has another date from the agency. Jerry arranges a tandem trip for Gail and Tricia.

Tricia and Gail get dressed in their new short outfits for their bike ride. Jerry prepares his own bike in the yard much to the amusement of Ray and Len. Hilda demands the tandem is returned in the same condition. Blanche feels that her house is no longer her own with Ray and Deirdre there. Eddie is turned on by the sight of the girls' legs but they refuse to let him come along. Ken tells Alf he's given up the computer dating business as he doesn't want all his details put into a machine. The girls are turned off by Jerry's professional cycling outfit and they set off, watched by Ray and Deirdre. Minnie enjoys cooking a meal for Eddie. He's depressed over his lack of success with women. In the hills, the girls struggle to keep up with Jerry. Ray and Deirdre look over flat adverts without any success. Deirdre thinks Annie's idea of a flat within Blanche's house is a good idea.

A bad-tempered Jerry returns with the wrecked tandem, much to Hilda's consternation. Ray wants to speak to Len and Jerry before deciding whether to do the conversion himself but Deirdre thinks he should do it himself and has a way of persuading him. Jerry's partners are amused when he staggers into the yard with the broken bike, furious that he came back on a milk float while Gail went off with a Porsche driver called Nigel to mend the bike's inner tube and never returned for him. Gail tells Tricia that Nigel took her to her Aunty Freda's in Dukinfield. The two row when Tricia doesn't believe her story but Gail worries where Jerry could be. Deirdre asks Len for a favour. Minnie hasn't slept, worrying about Gail and Jerry. Len shows Ray an estimate he's worked out for a job but Ray tells him it's too low. Gail mends the inner tube as a peace offering. She kids Eddie on about the great time she had with Nigel. R

A nervous Alf stays in the Rovers alone and is startled to find a half empty milk stout bottle in the snug. Len, Jerry and Ray join Alf. They are terrified when the lights go out and a candle appears in the darkness. Ray realises it's Eddie, Tricia and Gail. They all have a midnight party. During the party, Alf tells Len about Donna Parker and the £500. Eddie, Ray and the girls try to get in touch with Martha Longhurst with a Ouija board chalked on the table in the snug. The next morning, Betty is worried when she spots the milk stout left by the others on the bar, knowing it wasn't there the night before and not knowing of the party. Len makes plans to help Alf when he rings someone and asks for their assistance.

Hilda finds a letter they've received threatening legal action if the rates aren't paid. Annie chooses new kitchen sink fittings from Len. Alf tells Len to forget what he told him about Donna Parker and not interfere in his business. Len rings his contact, Det Sgt Taylor, and arranges to meet him in the Town Hall instead of the Rovers. Betty decides to stand with Ernie and not pay the rates but the Bishops have already paid up. Len meets Taylor and tells him about Alf's trouble without wanting to mentioning his name but Taylor guesses who it is. Mr Stanton of the council calls at No.13 to discuss the rent arrears. Refusing to let him in, Hilda berates him in the street in front of a crowd of cheering warehouse workers as newspaper man Eddie Royle photographs them. On a roll, she leads them into the Rovers for a picture of all the rates rebels, only to discover everyone else has paid theirs.

Ena returns and stays with Nellie Bickerstaffe in Pinfold Street. Ray and Deirdre decorate their flat. Mavis doesn't turn up at work. With Len minding The Kabin, Rita finds Mavis at home. It's clear something has upset her but Mavis won't say what it is. Rita tells her that she's behaving like a child. Eddie tries to mend the rift between Ena and Minnie. Minnie doesn't know why Ena is staying with Nellie as they've never got on. Ray completes the flat. Tricia and Gail get Ray to agree to a flat-warming. Rita tells Jerry about Mavis's odd behaviour. Mavis doesn't like Rita and Jerry talking about her. Minnie and Ena make up and Ena agrees to move in with her. Deirdre is annoyed about the party and feels they haven't got any furniture.

Mavis is back at The Kabin but jumps when customers walk in. Rita gets her to admit that her date said strange things to her and gave her a lock of hair. She thinks he's been following her. Rita looks in Mavis's handbag to find his details and tells Jerry his name is Brian Collett and he works at Fosters. Deirdre takes possession of her coffee table. Jerry meets Brian at his work and warns him off Mavis. He ends up feeling sorry for Brian as he is obviously lonely. Eddie looks after Michelle Turnbull, a friend's girlfriend. Jerry tells Mavis that Brian won't be bothering her again but says he isn't one of the "dirty raincoat brigade". Mavis thinks men like him should be weeded out. The residents approve the Langtons' flat. Eddie and Michelle gatecrash the party.

Deirdre spends the night with Blanche. She is annoyed when Ray cleans the flat up to show her up. Eddie tries to get the burn mark off the table with sandpaper. Deirdre and Ray act cool towards each other. Eddie makes a mess of the table, Len has to mend it and charges Eddie £2 for the labour. Deirdre makes up with Ray thinking he has mended the table. Eddie has been casing houses for Monkey Gibbons to burgle. He decides to give it up and tells Stan his doctor has said his chest can't stand all the fresh air so he can't help him any more. He considers working at the yard as a chippie. Ken is astonished when a fare turns out to be Janet Barlow. He helps her get rid of her lover, Vince Denton.

Janet spends the night at No.11. Monkey Gibbons gives Eddie a holdall and tells him to hide it from the police. He stores it in the yard. Ken tells Janet it does upset him to see her with another man. Ray finds the holdall. He and Len allow Eddie to get rid of it. Vince Denton arrives for Janet. He tells Ken he'd like to settle down with Janet. DC Thornton calls at No.13 as break-ins have been reported by Stan's customers.

Bert Gosling flirts with Betty. Eddie splits his time between Stan and Len. The police interview Stan about the burglaries. Hilda suggests they talk to Eddie. Len tells Eddie the police are after him. He stores the holdall at No.5, telling Minnie it's for the Salvation Army. Tricia is depressed at not having a man. Betty is embarrassed by Bert's sexual overtones. She is amused when he flirts with Annie. Annie is impressed with him as he's a businessman but he doesn't let on he's a fishmonger. Minnie gives the holdall to Det Sgt Taylor thinking he's from the Salvation Army.

Minnie realises she's made a mistake when Det Sgt Taylor finds stolen goods in the case. Bert Gosling gives Betty half a salmon. She realises she'll have to invite him to tea. Eddie admits to being a naughty boy to Minnie. He waits in the Rovers for Det Sgt Taylor to find him as he can't afford to make a fresh start somewhere else. Mavis doesn't like having to do extra work to cover Rita's absences for bookings. Annie thinks the salmon is for her and goes after Bert, scaring him off. The residents are amazed at Eddie waiting for the police. Bet makes Annie realise the salmon is Betty's. Minnie cries as Eddie is taken away.

Bernie Marsh, Chris Ashton and Kevin Marsh from the Gossamer Street flats run amok in the street. Mavis's workload is increased because of Rita's singing engagements. She is angry when Bernie, Chris and Kevin steal magazines from The Kabin. Betty looks after the shop for a holiday. Ken stops Len reporting the kids to the police as he used to teach them. Eddie is charged with dishonest handling. Ken catches the lads playing truant and takes the magazines from them. He tells them to go back to school. The lads smash a window at the community centre, just missing Albert. Ken tells Len he'll pay for the windows so long as the police aren't brought in. Albert contacts the police. Kevin tells his father that Ken is trying to frame them and that he hit them when he came round. Mavis tells Rita she's tired of being exploited by her.

Rita is furious when she has to make up the papers. Mavis tells her that she's not her slave. Rita threatens to sack her. The lads tip rubbish over Ken's backyard. Rita asks Len to sort militant Mavis out. Mavis tells Len how often she works a twelve hour day and he realises Rita is taking her for a mug. Ken tells Kevin Marsh to break the chain before he ends up in Borstal. The lads let Ken's tyres down so he can't work. Len tells Rita either to pay Mavis £2 a week out of her earnings or find another job. The Marshes threaten to have Ken charged with assault for hitting their boys whilst the lads set about wrecking No.11.

Ken is horrified at the state of No.11 when he arrives back home. An angry Rita refuses to give Mavis any money. Ken shows Douglas Marsh the house. Marsh offers him £30 to keep quiet but Ken makes him see that the boys have to be sorted out. Edna Gee celebrates her fortieth birthday. Ena helps clean up No.11 for Ken, roping Ivy, Edna, Tricia and Gail into the task. The lads consider running away after Mr Marsh tries to lay into them with a belt but is stopped by an appalled Ken. Jerry tells Rita that she's cruel, bullying and ungrateful. The Tilsleys and the Gees go out. Edna isn't pleased when her husband Fred flirts with Ivy. Rita has enough of everyone getting at her and decides to leave the area. The lads seek refuge for the night away from their father in the warehouse storeroom where Kevin Marsh leaves a cigarette burning.

16x77 Episode 1535 (1st October 1975)

The lads stop out all night in the warehouse and are awoken when the workers return in the morning. The dropped cigarette in the storeroom smoulders and then starts a fire. Rita packs her case. Ivy threatens Edna Gee with the sack if her work doesn't improve. Edna sneaks off to the storeroom for a cigarette. As she opens the door she is engulfed by flames. As the fire spreads, the workers panic and vacate the warehouse. Tricia suffers from shock and is laid out on the bench. Firemen battle to control the fire. Len settles Rita by saying he'll pay £2 extra a week to Mavis and will charge Rita £1 a week rent for the flat. Ivy searches for Edna as the fire rages on. The residents remember the fire at the maisonettes. The fireman can't control the blaze as the warehouse is full of flammable goods and liquefied petroleum gas.

16x78 Episode 1536 (6th October 1975)

The residents seek refuge at Bessie Street School. As Annie is still shopping, Bet and Betty save her valuables. The Bishops lay on food and tea at the school. Emily reminisces about her Auntie Mary. Minnie and Bobby find themselves at the New Old Inn run by Ginny Spencer and her daughters Tracey and Kim. She is joined by more residents. As word spreads that the pub is open, the refugees leave the distress centre in favour of the New Old Inn. The firemen find two bodies in the warehouse. Len finds out that one of them is Edna Gee. Ivy and Gail break down when they hear the news and Ivy tries to comfort Fred Gee, Edna's husband. The police refuse to let the residents return to their homes. The Langtons invite Len and Ken to stay at Blanche's house. Deirdre is furious when the others follow.

16x79 Episode 1537 (8th October 1975)

The street is still closed off as something in the warehouse let off gas when it burned. Ray invites Ken and Len to stay at Blanche's house. Hilda hears their conversation and she, Stan, Ena, Minnie, Tricia and Gail descend on the Langtons. Deirdre refuses to let anyone in the flat so everyone else battles for space downstairs. Emily is upset that no one is using the facilities at Bessie Street School. Hilda thinks Tricia and Gail are gossiping about her when they talk about the street being fumigated before realising her mistake and saying that the corner shop was fumigated. Bet turns up at Blanche's house to get the refugees in a party mood but everyone is worn out. The fire reminds Ken of Val's death.

16x80 Episode 1538 (13th October 1975)

The police allow the residents back into the street after the fire. The Rovers is flooded. Annie is furious when the fire officers leave the water in the cellar and finish for the day. The regulars bail it out. Minnie becomes worried when she can't find Bobby. Annie is worried about something of Jack's in the cellar - a nest egg of thirty gold sovereigns which were hidden there. She tells Len but swears him to secrecy. Tricia and Gail, having lost their jobs at the warehouse, apply for a modelling course at the Jet Girl Agency run by David Law. They're both smitten with him and are taken on. Len tells Annie they didn't find anything in the cellar and that he thinks the money was washed down the drain.

Tricia and Gail attend their first modelling class at the Jet Girl Agency, and sell their things to raise the fee. Stan receives a letter from Eddie Yeats. Annie suspects everyone of stealing the sovereigns. Bobby is still missing. Bet finds the sovereigns behind a loose brick in the cellar and gives them to Annie. Annie is asked to give a speech for Lady Victuallers and asks Ken to write it. Tricia and Gail discover that the Agency is bogus and has gone bust, losing them their money.

16x82 Episode 1540 (20th October 1975)

Annie and Blanche miss the warehouse custom. Tricia and Gail become agents for Weatherfield Heating Bureau, phoning people up canvassing sales. The Bureau installs a phone for them in the flat. Betty tells Emily that Gordon Clegg wishes the fire had wafted over to the other side of the street so he could get rid of the shop and claim on the insurance. The girls take a while to get the hang of telesales; Tricia's first caller hangs up on her when she drops her script and is rendered mute, while Gail forgets her own name. Blanche gets Hilda worrying about Stan's diet, telling her that big eaters consume as a substitute for love. Tricia gets a woman interested in the insulation but they only make 50p from each one. Ray warns the girls that the insulation they're selling might be dodgy. Tricia thinks he's only against it as it's competition for Fairclough, Langton and Booth. Ernie thinks of applying for the job of Community Development Officer at the centre.

Stan doesn't like the new food Hilda is cooking him and secretly buys pies from the shop. Alf borrows Stan's cart for an undisclosed purpose. Ray offers the girls money if they'll tell him who's interested in insulation. They refuse as it's unethical. Ernie can't believe Alf is reinstalling Ena after what he and Emily went through getting her out. He doesn't think Ena is up to it but Alf thinks otherwise as she'll have Ken for support. Tricia uses the phone to make a date with Pete Dawson at the flat. Hilda thinks Stan has lost his vitality and considers going vegetarian, to his horror. Pete turns up with Brian Jones, who fancies Gail but Tricia has got rid of her expecting a night of passion. Alf tells Ken that the Marshes have been taken in for starting the fire. He points out the community needs him for his caring attitude. Ken doesn't like the way everyone is telling him what he should be doing with his life.

Annie returns from Derby, making the final leg of her journey in Ken's taxi. She's embarrassed when he carries her bags into the Rovers. Gordon returns on business and stays with Betty. The Bishops offer Ena the community centre flat rent-free in exchange for her carrying out minor duties. She's still bitter about being evicted by the pair on Christmas Eve but ultimately accepts. Ken writes Annie's speech for a Lady Victuallers meeting. Annie practices it in front of Ken, Gail and Tricia. The latter two make fun of her pretensions. Jerry shows Tricia how to play darts but she doesn't manage to hit the board. Ken, Gordon, Deirdre and Ray go to see Rita sing at the Gatsby. Gordon chats up barmaid Sophie Edwards but gets drunk and she ends up looking after him. Jerry helps Ena move into her flat. Ena wishes that Jerry would marry again. Rita is able to leave the club before her slot finishes as Ralph Lancaster isn't there.

Betty wonders what Gordon got up to with Sophie Edwards. Gordon thinks Betty is against Sophie because she's black though Betty is offended by the suggestion. He doesn't remember telling Sophie about Betty being his mother. Ernie wants to have a musical night at the Rovers. Annie likes the idea. Albert tells Annie that Ken didn't apply for the Community Development Officer position. Ena cooks a thank-you meal for Jerry, Tricia and Gail. Annie reprimands Ken when his taxi controller calls the Rovers with a message for him. He promises that the calls will stop but Annie isn't placated; she tells him to pull his socks up and find a proper job. Sophie arrives at the Rovers for a date with Gordon. She is stood up as Gordon was drunk when he asked her out and has forgotten about it. Bet calls him at Betty's house to let him know. Ken takes the day off work for depression. He's fed up with everyone in the street being so familiar.

Ray and Deirdre wonder if Sophie Edwards is right and Betty is Gordon's mother. Hilda hears them talking about it in the corner shop. Gordon tells Betty that Sophie gave away their secret. Betty is afraid to go into work but Gordon convinces her to carry on as normal. Ken can't build up any enthusiasm for the Community Development Officer position and wishes it wasn't in Weatherfield. Hilda spreads it around that Gordon is Betty's bastard. She thinks Betty ought to be ashamed but everyone feels sorry for her. Alf gives Ken advice on how to impress the community centre committee. Gordon confirms that Betty is his mother to Deirdre and Ray and asks them to keep it to themselves, not realising that the cat is out of the bag. The community centre committee interview Ken. Alderman Chapman doesn't like him as he's a taxi driver and doesn't have any relevant qualifications. The rest of the panel are swayed by his ideas for getting people to take an active part in improving their community.

Betty isn't ready to go back to work yet; she feels she's lost people's respect. Ken throws himself into his new job, planning a special evening for Bonfire Night. He writes a modern version of the Gunpowder Plot for the local children to perform and hires Emily as his deputy. Albert lends Bessie's old cookery book to Bet but snatches it back when the youngsters laugh at her remedies. Annie grows impatient waiting for Betty to return to the Rovers. Gordon invites Betty to live with him in London. Bet advises her to go as she has nothing to stay in Weatherfield for but she feels she'd be miserable. Gordon tries to talk her round by saying she can come down when she's ready. Deirdre shows off her talent on the mouth organ to prove to Ray that she can play it. Betty decides that living with Gordon wouldn't work for either of them and turns him down as he leaves for London. The kids ignore Ken's show in favour of the bonfires at the Red Rec.

Frank Bradley returns to Weatherfield, working for the brewery. Ken is discouraged by the failure of his Gunpowder Plot play and wonders what the community wants. Rita reprimands Mavis for letting customers run up their paper bills and makes her chase them up. Ken meets Janice Berry who runs the youth section of the community centre. Janice fancies Ken and offers to help him in any way she can. Deirdre thinks that she and Ray spend too much money on alcohol. Len receives a phone call from the police. Emily accuses Ernie of being pleased that Ken isn't doing well as he thinks he would have done a better job. Bet is delighted to see Frank as a brewery drayman. He tells her he's doing relief and has been keeping out of trouble since they last saw each other. Mavis only collects £17.14 after dealing with angry customers all day. Ken refuses Ernie's suggestion of musical appreciation classes as they won't attract young people. Hilda starts work cleaning the centre.

Janice Berry refuses a girl admittance to a dance when she doesn't bring her cigarettes. Len, Mavis, Emily, Deirdre and Ray go to Jerry's funeral. Janice makes it clear to Ken she fancies him. Bet feels that Frank Bradley will only use her when he wants to. Betty contacts the brewery to see if Stan's consumption at the Rovers is a record. They plan to send a photographer round. Ken invites Ernie to give a film show for the kids. He begins to realise Janice is not what she seems. Mike Fielding from the brewery comes with a photographer who takes Stan's picture for publicity and they grant him free beer for a week as thanks. Mary Broughton tells Ken that Janice blackmails the kids. Bet lets Frank stay the night with her.

Annie returns from visiting Billy in Jersey to discover Sean Regan - Concepta's husband - is coming over. Ken doesn't know whether or not to believe Mary Broughton. Bet isn't pleased to find Sean staying at the Rovers. Frank Bradley tells Bet he wants their relationship to continue. Janice Berry tells Ken the other girls are jealous of her. Sean makes another pass at Bet. She tells him to leave her alone. Ken discovers Janice elected herself. He arranges a re-election. Sean doesn't like being rejected by Bet. Janice's supporters pressurise the kids. Sean tells Frank that Bet wants to spend the evening with him. Frank tells Bet he'll leave her with Sean. Mary is elected youth leader and Janice, humiliated, leaves the community centre. Bet pretends to Sean she likes him and lets him kiss her before belting him. She tells him that she's going to write to Concepta and tell her what sort of rat she married.

Annie wonders why Sean Regan leaves in the night. Minnie hears of a young family who have lost everything in a fire. She wonders if the residents can help them. Bet tells Betty about Sean and shows her the letter she's written to Concepta. Mavis feels that Len can't look after himself and cooks him a meal. Annie refuses to believe Sean would make a pass at Bet. She calls Bet a tart and sacks her. Minnie, Hilda and Mavis plan to make cakes and sell them to raise money for the family.

Les Grimes and Neil Foxall find nothing of value in the living room so go upstairs. Les doesn't like the idea but Neil pushes him. Annie wakes up and catches them in her bedroom. She refuses to tell them where her money is and has a battle of nerves with Neil. Seeing lights on, Albert tells Len and Ray there's something going on at the Rovers. Neil refuses to believe Annie keeps her money in the bank. Les and Neil try to run off when Ray and Len arrive. They fight but the lads escape. Annie goes into delayed shock. Len sports a black eye. Annie refuses to bring the police in. She tells Len that someone has written to the brewery complaining about her visits to Joan. She's worried that they will think she's vulnerable. Annie falls downstairs and knocks herself unconscious. Betty phones for an ambulance.

Annie is taken to hospital. Ken plans a production of Cinderella as a panto for Christmas. The residents worry about Annie but the hospital won't pass on news to anyone except family. Rita phones and pretends to be Joan Davies. They tell her Annie has extensive bruising and is still unconscious. The hospital feels that Annie's close family should be with her. Betty and Len inform the brewery. Hilda goes shopping for a Christmas present for Damian but can't afford anything decent. She gets a book on making soft toys. Annie comes round but is not allowed visitors. The panto is called off when the company disbands after Ken has sold two hundred tickets. Betty and Blanche stay the night at the Rovers. The brewery rep, Warren Coates, finds out from Betty that Annie lives on her own; they thought Billy was still in residence.

Ken tries to set up a one-man band competition. Hilda tells Warren Coates about the burglars. Ena advises Emily to put on Cinderella themselves, in three weeks. Emily starts casting the residents. Coates tells Betty that the brewery want what's best for Annie.

16x95 Episode 1554 (3rd December 1975)

Annie returns to the Rovers. Ken and Emily plan the panto. Blanche alters the costumes. Tricia tells Blanche she's seen Ray with a woman. Blanche and Len grow concerned that Ray is being unfaithful. Warren Coates turns up and shows Annie a picture of a Cheshire pub which could be hers next month. He tells her she has to move to the quieter pub. She easily outsmarts him and phones Douglas Cresswell, Managing Director of Newton & Ridley, and he orders a shaken Coates to leave a victorious Annie alone.

16x96 Episode 1555 (8th December 1975)

Annie tells Betty that she wouldn't move to another pub as she still feels as if Jack is with her in the Rovers. Alf sees Ray getting a blonde woman into his van. Mavis catches Eunice Wheeler walking out of The Kabin with a wind-up toy. Len makes Eunice return to the shop and orders Mavis to get the police in. Blanche is cool towards Ray. Mavis has to make a statement as Len decides he wants Eunice prosecuted. Rita is put in charge of producing the panto to Emily's anger. The residents are amazed at Tricia's singing voice. Bob Wheeler, Eunice's husband, tells Mavis she has ruined Christmas for his family.

16x97 Episode 1556 (10th December 1975)

Emily gets Mavis to play Baroness Stoneybroke in the panto to take her mind off the shoplifting case, not knowing that Rita has cast Annie. Alf tells Len he's seen Ray with a woman in Redmond Road. Tricia is annoyed that she won't have much time to practice her songs. Len confronts Ray who tells him to get knotted. Mavis tries to make amends to the Wheelers by giving them presents for the children but Bob Wheeler throws them back when she refuses to change her statement. Blanche worries Deirdre by asking Ray why he married her. He says he loves her. Annie and Bet don't think much of Alf's lethargic approach to the ugly sister role and help him inject life into the lines. Rita sees an opportunity to get round Annie and asks her to give the cast speech lessons instead of playing Baroness Stoneybroke. Annie graciously steps aside. Deirdre questions Blanche on her attitude towards Ray. Blanche tells her he has another woman. Tricia suggests that the actors mime the songs in the panto as no

16x98 Episode 1557 (15th December 1975)

Ray and Deirdre aren't speaking to each other. Deirdre blames Blanche for acting on hearsay and demands to know who told her about Ray's other woman. Rita plans to get Bet to mime to her singing. The Langtons aren't speaking to each other. Ernie doesn't think the cast can pull it off. Rita and Len make Mavis go to court to testify as the case against Eunice Wheeler rests on her statement. Len takes Mavis to court in his van. Ray refuses to tell Deirdre what really went on and leaves her to make up her own mind. Annie coaches Alf on his stage voice, which serves only to make him more muddled. Deirdre tells Len she doesn't think the rumour about Ray is true.

16x99 Episode 1558 (17th December 1975)

The residents put the last minute touches to the panto. Tricia covers her black eye with an eyepatch. Ena warns Albert about drinking before the dress rehearsal to quash his nerves. He's offended by her insinuation that he can't handle it and gets blind drunk. Hilda receives a call from France informing her that Stan is stranded there as his mate's lorry has broken down and he can't make the panto. Rita and Ernie ask Ray to take Stan's part - one of the ugly sisters - but he turns them down flat.

16x100 Episode 1559 (24th December 1975)

The audience of children assemble in the community centre. Rita apologises to Hilda for being sharp with her. Hilda's delighted when Trevor turns up with flowers, saying he's driven over specially to watch her. Rita and Mavis start to suffer nerves. Tricia's black eye still shows through her make-up. Trevor goes for a drink in the Rovers with Ken and tells him that Irma still lives in Llandudno and that Polly is expecting. Betty overhears. The cast wait for curtain up. Trevor rings Polly and tells her that he's not had the chance to ask his mother what he wants yet. Tricia refuses to wish Deirdre luck. As the panto starts, Deirdre refuses to remove her glasses so that she can see properly. Bet performs When I Fall in Love but mimes to Rita's singing. She gets annoyed when Rita deliberately changes the tempo of the tune. Ken and Ray bring over a crate of ales for the cast and help themselves to a drink while the performance continues.

16x101 Episode 1560 (29th December 1975)

29 December, 1975 8:00 pm
Rita feels ill after a night out with a man named Rex from London but is due to go out again and invites Bet to go with him instead of a blind date at a posh do at a new motel. The Kabin paper deliveries are wrong and Hilda complains she has been sent a physical culture magazine. Tricia basks in her success after the panto and is happy that she can keep her costume. Rita tries to bring her down to earth with stories about the rough times of her own show business career. Through Alf, a small lad asks Tricia for her autograph. Annie lends Bet a mink stole. Annie is pleased to get a phone call from Concepta Regan saying she's at Manchester Airport and is invited to stay, nevertheless she wonders why she's coming. Bet also worries that the visit means trouble about Sean Regan. The Weatherfield Gazette hails Tricia as a rising star in its review which Ken reads out in the Rovers though it also mentions Bet's miming.

16x102 Episode 1561 (31st December 1975)

Blanche deliberately undercharges Minnie in the shop but Ena sees through her kindness. Tricia is sent chocolates by an unknown admirer though she has her suspicions as to who it might be. Annie plans the New Year's Eve party for Rovers. Hilda tries to find why Sean isn't with Concepta but Annie diverts the conversation on to Stan's whereabouts in France. Gail teases Tricia by asking Rita for show business tips but Mavis butts in and says such people are selfish and don't consider others. Rita is forced to agree. Hilda shows off a French Christmas card from Stan. Bet organises a meeting in the Rovers' back room to talk about how to catch - and keep - a man in 1976. Blanche closes the shop to join in with it. Bet urges the women to be organised for Leap Year. Annie and Ena are amused by the meeting. Mavis has researched the matter and tells the women that if historically the man turned the woman down he was fined £1.
